When listening to MP3's on a data CD, my 2014 RAV4 DOES remember that the random was set when the vehicle is turned off and back on. So why can't the same be true for music being played from a USB stick?

Obviously the media types are different as well as the format - i.e. USB sticks must be FAT32 and CD's are UDF. I formatted a USB stick in UDF but Entune wouldn't recognize it.

Every time I've complained, Toyota's reply is "Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us." Leaves one with the impression that Toyota doesn't really care about customer complaints. If they would tell us the cannot or will not fix the problem - LET US KNOW!!!!

Does anyone from Toyota actually read these forums?

Thanks for the info!! Do you happen to know which version of Entune is installed?

No I don't and I'm not even sure how to check.

I have an 8GB USB drive with just over 1,100 songs on it. After several attempts adjusting the MP3 tags (adding random numbers to the song title, adding random numbers to the artist, etc.) nothing worked. Tried putting songs in various folders which didn't have any effect. When the vehicle is turned off and back on, it will not remember the random mode setting. Only after removing all the MP3 tags and it will play songs in random order. Another thing I noticed is that songs play that have never or rarely played before in random mode after removing the MP3 tags.

The songs are on the flash drive as artist name - song name.mp3. One downside I noticed is it only displays xx number of charters of the file name on the screen. It's not smart enough to display the whole rest of the file name on the next line. Without any tags, Grace Note doesn't display any album art. Don't really need the album art because I know what songs are on the USB drive ;) The other downside is the I cannot request a specific song or artist by using the voice recognition system.

2014 corolla had this issue since day one. Toyota replaced radio in 2016 due to bad touchscreen. Bonus..... usb issue is fixed with this replacement radio. I assume it must have a newer software installed.

I certainly agree with your comments, particularly with the last one.

I've managed to largely solve this problem. I own a 2015 Corolla LE (not using Entune) with a USB stick containing a single root folder (no subfolders) containing over 1,500 songs. My car now always picks up from the last song it left off with.

It seems the issue stems from the artist and album ID3 tags in the MP3 files. I changed the artist tags to "Artist" and the album tags to "Album" (although any consistent string of characters would probably work) in all of my MP3 files. Here are several things which did NOT work:

* Removing the Artist and Album ID3 tags entirely from the MP3 files
* Changing the Artist or Album ID3 tag values to "" (blank string)
* Changing just the artist to "Artist", or just the album to "Album"

The down side with my scheme is that for the currently playing song, the display will show only the song title (the artist and album will show up as "Artist" and "Album" respectively). You can edit the title to show the artist's name (or anything else for that matter) but space will be limited since the screen only shows one line of text for the song title, and it will get visually truncated if it's too long.

to;dr: Change the ID3 artist tag to "Artist" and the ID3 album tag to "Album" for all your MP3 files.

Thanks for the reply!!

Since my initial post, I no longer have the 2014 RAV. Leased a 2017 RAV 4 a little over a year ago with no CD player. I don't have to set the random mode when listening to music on a USB flash drive every time I turn the vehicle on.

But there are still intermittent problems. It forgets random is set after every 2-3 engine cycles and plays the 1st song stored on the USB stick. I get around this by requesting a specific song then it goes back into random mode. (An obvious oversight in the voice commands is the inability to set random mode via voice.)

The USB stick I use has just over 1,000 songs stored in the "root" directory. Tried what the manual says and created individual directories with no more than 256 songs in each directory. There doesn't seem to be any difference in the songs being played "randomly" whether the songs are in the root directory vs. individual directories.

The random mode also seems to turn itself off when it's cold outside. Also noticed the random mode sometimes turns off when opening the fuel door to get gas and occasionally when raising and lowering the rear hatch. Sounds strange but it's driving me nuts because the problem is not consistent and seems to have a mind of its own ;)

The USB stick is plugged in all the time and noticed Entune sometimes forgets the USB stick is even plugged in after turning the vehicle on.

I've tried several USB sticks and almost every combination of ID tags and nothing has worked:
Tried using full tags (song title, artist, album, genre, etc.)
Tried completely blank tags
Tried song title & artist only
